Butternut Origin:
Butternut trees are found in the northeastern section of Canada and the eastern United States extending all the way south to Arkansas and west to North Dakota. This species is a part of the Walnut family
Butternut Workability:
Butternut is easy to work with by hand and with machine tools. It is fairly easy to dry and once dry is very stable. It does have a tendency to leave some fuzzy surfaces after planning or sanding so sharp cutters and fine-grit sand paper is recommended. Butternut nails/screws, glues, stains, and finishes well.
Uses:It is a soft wood, ideal for carving wood. It is also used for furniture and interior trim.
Color:The sapwood of Butternut is usually narrow and off-white in color. The heartwood is a light to medium brown with a satiny straight grain.
Janka Hardness:490 (soft). Slightly harder than Basswood.
Decay and Weather Resistance:It is rated as having low to moderate decay resistance and is susceptible to insect attack.
