Chestnut, Fumed Euro

Origin: European Chestnut, also referred to as Sweet Chestnut or Spanish Chestnut, originates from Europe and Asia Minor.

Color: European Chestnut ranges from tan to medium-brown and often will darken to a red-brown as it ages.  All of our European Chestnut has been fumed with ammonia.  This darkens the heartwood to a rich dark brown almost black color.  It is important to note that the company that fumes our wood uses a process that darkens the heartwood all the way through unlike other processes that just darken the surface of the wood.  Note: This process doesn’t affect the sapwood so the edges are left a light tan and create a defined contrast.

Janka Hardness: 680 (soft). Similar in hardness to Douglas Fir.

Decay and Weather Resistance: European Chestnut is rated as very durable and rot resistant.

Workability: It is generally easy to work with by hand or machine. It glues, stains, and finishes well; however, there may be splitting so you must take care when using nails or screws.

Uses: European Chestnut is commonly used for fine furniture (indoor and outdoor), cabinetry, veneer, and carving.
