Origin: Guanacaste can be found in Mexico, southward through Central America, and into northern South America.

Color: The heartwood has a beautiful reddish brown color and Koa-like figure. The sapwood is an off-white to pale yellow color and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood.

Janka Hardness: 470 (soft) (Similar in hardness to Butternut)

Decay and Weather Resistence: Rated as durable to very durable especially in water; because of this it is often used in making canoes.

Workability: Guanacaste is easy to work with both by hand and machine tools, but tear out is common during planning. It finishes smoothly into a high luster.

Uses: Because it is so beautiful and similiar in appearance to Koa, Guanacaste is used in furniture, cabinetry, veneer, turnings and gunstocks.  Its wide widths makes it ideal for 1 piece table tops.

Misc:  The dust from sanding this wood can cause allergic responses to some woodworkers.
