Purpleheart

Origin: Purpleheart, also known as Amaranth, can be found in Central and South America from Mexico south to Brazil.

Color: True to its name, Purpleheart is a grayish-purple when freshly cut and dries to a dark eggplant purple. If exposed to UV light for a long period of time it will turn to a dark brown with purple tint. This species is most often found with straight grain.

Janka Hardness: 2,520 ( very hard)

Decay and Weather Resistance: This is a very durable species with great resistance to decay and most insects (is reported to be susceptible to marine borer attack)

Workability: Purpleheart can be difficult to work with; it is found to exude a sticky resin when heated up (with dull tools for example) and can clog machinery. It is also common to have tearout when planning.

Uses: It is commonly used in accent or inlay pieces, for a hint of color. It can also be found in fine furniture, boat building, and flooring
